Chains of the Soul

Inspired by W. Somerset Maugham's novel: Of Human Bondage

Philip Carey, an orphan afflicted with a club foot, struggled internally with his identity. He often felt incomplete due to his physical condition, seeing it as a metaphorical invisible chain, an impediment to his freedom. In his youth, he sought solace in the company of books. His favorite, 'Lysistrata' since it resonated with his longing for affection and connections he hadn't found, yet yearned for.

Philip's life took a drastic turn when he met Mildred Rogers, a waitress. Alluring and manipulative, Mildred was an embodiment of the harsh realities of Philip's world. She was an enigma that he desperately wanted to unravel. Their tumultuous relationship was marked with pain, rejection and manipulation; it was a representation of the human bondage Maugham vividly painted.

Despite his love for Mildred, he was met with constant rejection. Philip's club foot, a symbolic chain of his physical flaw became a barrier between them. The more he yearned for Mildred, the tighter his chains seemed. A heartbroken Philip spiraled into self-loathing, kept under the thumb of his unrequited love.

In time, Philip encountered another character, Sally Athelny. Unlike Mildred, she radiated genuine warmth and care. She was a beacon of hope, inviting Philip towards acceptance and self-love. His connection with Sally was unbinding, freeing him from his insecurities and self-imposed chains. Here, he found a genuine bond, unchained by the societal norms and self-hatred, he felt towards himself due to his deformity.

In the end, Philip realized that the chains of his soul were his own construct, his bondage was self-imposed. He understood that the healing process begins with self-love and acceptance. The chains around his soul began to loosen, ushering him towards a path of self-discovery and liberation.

Philip's journey is a reflection of human adversities and the battle with self-imposed restrictions. It is a poignant tale of breaking free from the chains of societal norms, physical conditions, and emotional turmoil - to find true liberation within oneself.
