A Silent Prayer in the Desert

Inspired by Willa Cather's novel: Death Comes for the Archbishop

Bishop Jean Latour was a man of unwavering faith, a faith that had guided him through the barren lands of New Mexico. On this particular day, which had begun as any other, he felt a strange heaviness in his heart. He had received a letter from his dear friend and fellow missionary, Father Joseph Vaillant. The letter spoke of Vaillant's failing health and his impending demise.

Even though the news had shaken Latour, he found solace in their shared belief that death was merely a transition into a superior, eternal life. Latour, however, couldn't shake off his worry for his friend. He decided to make a journey to see Vaillant, even though the route was hazardous, and he was himself not in good health.

He began his journey, under the unforgiveable southwestern sun, a small silhouette against the vast expanse of the desert. The route was treacherous, but Latour's determination was unyielding. His heart was filled with memories of their shared past, their struggles, and their triumphs. They had together brought a sense of order and faith to this wild land, only to be separated by this inevitable end.

By the time he reached the humble Adobe residence of Father Vaillant, night had fallen. He was greeted by the sight of his friend, pale and weak, but with a peaceful smile on his face. It was as if Vaillant had been waiting for him, to share his last moments together. They spoke at length, reminiscing about their journey, sharing their fears, and strengthening their faith. Vaillant was ready to meet his maker, without fear or regret, and Latour was there to lend his support and strength.

As dawn approached, Vaillant's health deteriorated rapidly. Latour held his friend's cold hand, whispering hymns and prayers into his ear. With the first rays of the sun, Vaillant took his last breath, leaving Latour alone in the silence of the desert.

The story of Bishop Jean Latour and his journey, both physical and spiritual, towards accepting the inevitable death of his friend, mirrors the central themes of Willa Cather's novel, 'Death Comes for the Archbishop.' Bishop Latour's journey is also symbolic of the human struggle to comprehend and accept mortality, depicted against the vast and unforgiving landscape of the New Mexican desert.
